Epoxy Grout vs Cement Grout: Which Is Better for Showers and Bathrooms?

Grout may appear to play a supporting role in a bathroom, but anyone who has spent time scrubbing stained joints knows how noticeable it becomes when it no longer performs—or looks—as expected.

 

For many years, traditional cement grout was the familiar choice between tiles. Today, epoxy grout is increasingly selected for showers, bathroom floors and other areas regularly exposed to water. It is often described as the premium option, but does that mean it is automatically the right grout for every tiled surface?

 

Not necessarily. Epoxy and cement grout are made differently, behave differently and require different installation methods. Understanding those differences makes it easier to choose a product for the conditions in your home rather than simply choosing the one with the longest list of benefits.

What is traditional cement grout?

Cement grout is made primarily from cement, fillers and pigments, with different formulations available for various joint widths and applications. It has been widely used in Australian homes for decades and remains a common choice for walls, floors and general tiled areas.

 

Once mixed with water or a manufacturer-supplied additive, it is worked into the joints and allowed to cure. The finished grout is hard, but it remains porous. This means it can absorb moisture and staining unless an appropriate penetrating sealer is applied and maintained.

 

Cement grout is available in many colours, is generally more economical than epoxy and is familiar to most tilers. When installed correctly in a suitable location and properly maintained, it can provide a neat and practical finish.

What is epoxy grout?

Epoxy grout is a resin-based product. Its components are mixed immediately before installation, creating a chemical reaction that allows the material to cure into a dense, highly durable finish.

 

Unlike cement grout, cured epoxy grout is waterproof and non-porous. It does not rely on a penetrating sealer and offers strong resistance to staining, moisture and many household chemicals. These qualities make it particularly useful in showers, bathrooms and other demanding wet areas.

 

There is, however, an important distinction: waterproof grout does not waterproof an entire shower. A correctly constructed shower still depends on its waterproofing membrane, substrate, plumbing, drainage, movement joints and other building components. Epoxy grout provides a waterproof joint, but it cannot compensate for failed waterproofing or structural defects underneath the tiles.

Water absorption

Traditional cement grout is porous and can absorb water. Sealing reduces absorption and helps protect it, but does not transform cement grout into epoxy grout.

 

Epoxy grout is waterproof and non-porous once correctly mixed, installed and cured. This is one of the main reasons it is selected for shower floors and other areas exposed to frequent water.

Because cement grout is porous, spills, soap residue and discolouration can gradually penetrate its surface—particularly when the sealer has worn or the grout has not been sealed.

 

Epoxy grout is highly stain resistant, making it easier to maintain in areas where ordinary grout may quickly become marked. “Stain resistant” does not mean “impossible to make dirty”: residue can still build up on the surface, and regular cleaning remains necessary.

Epoxy grout does not absorb moisture in the way cement grout does, so it provides less opportunity for mould and mildew to establish within the grout itself. Surface growth can still occur where moisture, soap residue, poor ventilation and organic material are present.

 

No grout can replace good bathroom ventilation and regular cleaning. Mould may also develop on silicone or other surrounding surfaces, regardless of which grout has been installed.

Durability

Epoxy grout is strong and highly resistant to cracking, erosion and everyday wear when installed in a suitable, stable tiled area. This can make it a valuable option for frequently used showers and floors.

 

Cement grout is more vulnerable to gradual wear and deterioration, although its lifespan varies considerably depending on the installation, location, maintenance and movement within the tiled surface.

 

It is worth remembering that an exceptionally strong grout cannot stop the building around it from moving. Existing structural movement, loose tiles or an unstable substrate should be addressed before any new grout is installed.

Appearance

Both grout types are available in a range of colours. Cement grout generally has a familiar, slightly more natural or matte appearance, while epoxy can produce a denser, more uniform finish.

 

Epoxy grout tends to retain its colour well because it is less absorbent, but installation quality matters. Uneven cleaning during application can leave residue or haze on the tile surface, which can be difficult to remove once cured.

Maintenance

Cement grout benefits from appropriate sealing to reduce staining and moisture absorption. Depending on the product, location and level of use, the sealer may need to be reapplied over time.

 

Epoxy grout does not need a penetrating grout sealer. It still needs routine cleaning to remove soap, body oils and surface residue, but the non-porous joints are generally easier to keep looking consistent.

Cost

Epoxy grout costs more than traditional cement grout. The product itself is more expensive, and its installation is more specialised and labour intensive.

 

It has a limited working time once mixed, requires careful application and must be cleaned from the tile surface at the correct stages. This is not a product that rewards a relaxed “we’ll tidy it up tomorrow” approach—once cured, epoxy is extremely difficult to remove.

 

The higher initial cost needs to be weighed against its durability, reduced sealing requirements and ease of ongoing maintenance.

Why epoxy grout installation requires experience

Epoxy grout behaves very differently from cement grout. Accurate mixing, timing, temperature, tile type and cleaning technique all influence the finished result.

 

The installer must work methodically in manageable sections, completely fill the joints and remove residue without washing material out of the joints. Porous, textured or natural stone tiles may require special consideration because epoxy residue can lodge in the surface or affect the appearance.

 

Using the correct product is only half the decision. Correct preparation and installation are equally important.

Is epoxy grout always the better choice?

Epoxy grout has significant advantages, but “better” depends on the area and what you want to achieve.

 

It may be particularly worthwhile for:

 

- Shower floors exposed to water every day

- Bathroom floors where improved stain resistance is valued

- Frequently used wet areas

- Homes where easier grout maintenance is a priority

- Areas where cement grout has repeatedly become stained or deteriorated

- Suitable tiled surfaces where a durable, waterproof grout joint is desired

 

Cement grout may remain a practical choice for:

 

- Lower-moisture tiled walls and general indoor areas

- Projects with a more limited budget

- Tiles or finishes for which epoxy is not recommended

- Areas where its appearance and characteristics are preferred

- Sound existing installations that do not require the additional performance of epoxy

 

The right answer can also be a combination. For example, epoxy grout may be selected for a shower floor while another suitable grout is retained or installed elsewhere in the bathroom.

Can epoxy grout repair a leaking shower?

Epoxy grout can form part of a leaking shower repair when deteriorated or failed grout joints are contributing to water penetration and the shower is otherwise suitable for this type of work.

 

It should not be presented as a universal cure. If the leak comes from plumbing, a failed waterproofing membrane, structural movement, loose tiles or a damaged substrate, replacing the visible grout will not correct the underlying fault.

 

This is why the shower should be assessed before epoxy is recommended. The strongest grout available is not the right solution if the actual problem lies somewhere else.

Does epoxy grout mean no more cleaning?

Unfortunately, no grout comes with a self-cleaning button.

 

Epoxy grout resists absorption and staining, but soap, minerals and bathroom residue can still settle on its surface. Gentle, regular cleaning is more effective than waiting for a heavy buildup and then relying on harsh chemicals or abrasive tools.

 

Always follow the grout and cleaning-product manufacturers’ instructions. Even a chemically resistant surface can be affected by inappropriate products, prolonged exposure or aggressive scrubbing.

Questions to consider before choosing

Before deciding between epoxy and cement grout, ask:

 

- Is the area regularly exposed to water?

- Are the existing tiles secure and the substrate sound?

- Is staining or maintenance a significant concern?

- Is the tile type suitable for epoxy grout?

- Are there signs of a leak that require assessment first?

- Is the priority lower initial cost or stronger long-term performance?

- Will the entire area be regrouted, or only a particular section?

 

These questions are more useful than choosing based on one feature alone.

Choosing grout for the conditions—not just the colour chart

Traditional cement-based grout remains a practical and economical choice for many tiled areas. Epoxy grout, however, offers a higher level of performance, with excellent resistance to moisture, staining and mould, along with greater durability and lower maintenance. These qualities make it particularly well suited to demanding wet areas such as showers.

The right choice of grout depends on where it will be installed, the condition of the existing tiled area and the result you are hoping to achieve. It is also important to recognise that grout alone cannot resolve underlying issues such as failed waterproofing, plumbing problems or structural movement.
